One great and very easy way to welcome this season into your home is with a scented candle, perfect for a quiet evening by the fire, to brighten your spirits on a cold winter’s day, it sets the tone for a festive gathering and is the perfect antidote on cold dark nights with warm aromas to comfort and soothe the soul. Candle light definitely evokes the spirit of the season, maybe more than any other decoration for there is indeed something truly magical about candle light.

Many families, maybe even most, have a tradition of lighting candles over the Christmas period.  Traditions take many forms, burning candles at the dinner table, which never fails to impress or look beautiful, using candles in festive table arrangements with candles, traditional angel chimes and who could ever forget the Blue Peter Advent Crown because famously candles and flammable substances mix, right?

Candle light is historically, irrevocably linked to the festive season; from pagan times and ancient winter solstice celebrations, a way of remembering that spring would soon come.  Since the Middle Ages, candle light for Christians at Christmas has symbolised the star of Bethlehem, the guiding light for the Magi to the stable where Jesus was born. For those that follow the Jewish faith, the Menorah is used during Hanukkah to symbolise the miracle of Chanukah.  Even modern electric fairy lights are meant to mimic the tradition of candles on the tree, popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the 1800s.

Candles also make an exceptional gift, especially those who are difficult to buy for, this brilliant gift idea means that they can use the candle straight away on Christmas day and then store it away to enjoy on the run up to Christmas the following year, this helps to create lasting memories.
