Are you a '70s Soul' - Our New 2022 Summer Design
Are you a 70s Soul?
We are releasing our new summer design, '70s Soul' inspired by the late 60s and early 70s advertising works of John Alcorn for the Un-Cola brand, 7Up. This amazing design has been created exclusively for 70s House Manchester featuring our psychedelic '70s Soul' artwork by renown illustrator Scarlett Rickard who illustrated the bestselling graphic novel based on Robert Tressell's highly political working class classic 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists'
John Alcorn - 1935 - 1992, was a prolific designer, illustrator of childrens books and an accomplished commercial artist whos career included a period at Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast’s Push Pin Studios.
Some of his most famous illustrative works in the psychedelic style are for the covers of the Sydney Omarr astrolgical books which were published by Signet in 1969.
The psychedelic art style which evolved in the mid 60s and was typically associated with sex, drugs and rock n roll was quickly appropriated by the late 60s by main stream corporations, seemingly keen to cash in on the popularity of the 1969 Beatles movie 'Yellow Submarine'.

John Alcorn was drafted in by failing beverage company who produced Pepsi and 7Up, who had been trading since the early 1920s to reinvent their sparking lemon and lime soda and brand of revial cola drink. The brand was on verge of bankruptcy and this 1969 advertising campaign rescued the company with its series of fresh and vibrant advertising desings, along with the slogan that positioned 7Up in direct opposition to its rivals, branding the drink the "Un-Cola"
